Beautiful Surprise Framed in Nature and Tradition
This story of Tristan and Adriana, a remote working couple who decided to take a short break from their busy routines and spend quality time together in Japan. When Tristan was searching for a photographer, he said he felt instantly connected to my style and booked the session right away. During our discussion about the location, he revealed his real plan: he wanted to propose during the photoshoot and needed my help arranging the moment. They arrived just as the sun began to rise over the park, illuminating the serene landscape. I watched them from a distance as they enjoyed the view, completely unaware of what was about to happen. I then approached them and pretended to be a photographer who needed “last-minute models” for a few test shots. They agreed with a smile and Adriana had no idea this was part of the proposal plan. I guided them onto a stone bridge and I asked them to do a back-to-back pose, Tristan slowly got down on one knee and opened a small ring box. Adriana froze, her surprise giving way to emotion, and she said "Yes" just seconds later. It was a simple, deeply meaningful moment I was fortunate to witness and preserve.
After the proposal, we continued the photo session and explored the park. They walked along an old stone staircase surrounded by lush trees, and I photographed small gestures that showed their connection: warm glances and soft touches. When they shared a gentle dance among the autumn leaves, it created a beautiful scene, and I immediately captured it to preserve the memory. They sat on a park bench framed by deep red leaves, their outfits adding a nice contrast. I took a few close ups to capture the details of the engagement ring.
They crossed a row of small stepping stones and paused in the middle for a gentle kiss. A willow tree nearby created a unique natural frame with its hanging branches. Not far from there, we took a few fun shots in front of a vending machine, just a touch of everyday Japan to add variety to their gallery.
Leaving the serene park, we continued exploring the neighborhood. We paused at a local shrine, capturing their portraits in front of the vibrant orange torii gates and traditional lanterns to beautifully layer in cultural depth. Next, we wandered into a narrow alley lined with rustic wooden buildings and stopped by a storefront with distinctive signage, effortlessly adding that authentic Kyoto street vibe. Every single scene felt cinematic in its own way.
For the second session, they changed into kimonos outfit. We started at a historic temple, the grounds alight with spectacular autumn colors. Against a backdrop of golden and orange leaves, they shared a moment of pure joy. Tristan, dressed in a deep blue kimono, gently led Adriana, whose ivory kimono and rich brown obi stood out beautifully. Their hands were raised and joined as they shared a slow, easy dance on the leaf strewn ground, a playful and intimate gesture in traditional Japanese setting. Just a short walk away, I framed their portraits against a majestic pagoda, a stunning blend of traditional architecture and seasonal beauty. I used the fiery autumn leaves as foreground elements, creating natural, aesthetic frames that added depth to their portraits.
As the session came to an end, I took a few more photos of them with the temple and pagoda in the background from different angles, adding more historic charm to their gallery. They shared another small dance, framed by the autumn scenery, almost like a scene from a classic film. Between wooden buildings, they played a short hide and seek moment, showing their playful side. To close the session, I captured them walking along the quiet street, with traditional Japanese architecture as the backdrop.
I’m grateful I could document their trip to Japan and help them experience both the natural and traditional sides of it. Even with their busy routines, they slowed down and celebrated the moment together. I hope these photos remind them of that beautiful morning they experienced in Kyoto.
