Fulfil Her Wish: Family Portrait in Kimono

This is the story of Beatrice and her family, who traveled to Japan for a meaningful holiday together. She wanted to preserve this trip as a beautiful memory, and when she came across my portfolio, she immediately felt connected to the way I capture simple, genuine moments. After she reached out, we discussed her ideas, and I learned that she has a strong appreciation for Japanese culture. She shared her wish for the whole family to wear kimono during the session, and I recommended a traditional location that would allow them to explore comfortably while matching the atmosphere she envisioned.

When we met on the day of the shoot, they were already dressed beautifully in traditional Japanese attire. Beatrice wore an orange kimono with a matching hair accessory, she looked elegant and confident. Her husband and their son wore grey kimonos, giving the family a cohesive and timeless look. We began exploring the area, surrounded by wooden buildings and narrow lanes. A tall pagoda stood in the background, adding a strong traditional element to their photos. I used a wide-angle lens to frame the pagoda from different angles while keeping the family in the scene.

We continued walking through a small alleyway with wooden walls on both sides, a perfect spot for warm, intimate portraits. I photographed Beatrice with her husband, then the kids, and finally the whole family together. They had an easy, natural chemistry, and the atmosphere felt relaxed. As they wandered through the neighborhood, their laughter and playfulness brought a lively energy to the session. The whole family began playing “jan-ken-pon,” the Japanese version of rock–paper–scissors. It didn’t matter who won or lost, what mattered was the joy of sharing this simple local game. I captured these candid moments as they unfolded, genuine and warm, reflecting the togetherness that made their trip so special.

Toward the end of the session, we passed by a small park. They sat down for a moment to rest and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. While Beatrice and her husband were chatting casually, their two sons suddenly surprised them from behind, making everyone burst into laughter. It was a spontaneous moment that felt truly special. This cheerful family lives in Australia but is originally from Fiji. I even learned a Fijian phrase from them — “Vinaka vakalevu,” which means thank you. I’m grateful to have captured this chapter of their family trip, and I hope that every time Beatrice’s family looks back at these photos, they are instantly transported to this beautiful memory, feeling the warmth and happiness of their Japanese adventure.
