A Journey from a Riverside Proposal to Intimate Nights in the Alley

This is the story of Best and Tangwan, a couple who chose to spend their winter holiday in Japan, taking a quiet pause from their daily lives. When Best was looking for a photographer to document their trip, he said he felt an instant connection with my photography style. He reached out and booked two sessions, one during the day, surrounded by nature, and another at night in a more cultural setting. Later, he shared his plan to propose during the photoshoot. I felt honored to be trusted with something so meaningful. That morning, they arrived at a riverside location. The place was serene, clear water, soft winter light, and a quiet atmosphere. They spent the first few moments simply walking and enjoying the surroundings. Suddenly, Best went down on one knee and opened a small ring box. Tangwan was surprised, but it didn’t take long for her to say yes. I captured everything as it unfolded: their reactions, the small gestures, and the way they looked at each other immediately after. Nothing was directed, these were just honest moments.

After that, the session continued in a lighter mood. They walked along the river, the winter breeze was still there, but it felt warmer in their embrace. Just enjoying the moment, they shared a small dance and a quiet exchange of looks, simple interactions that felt genuine. Their white outfits stood out softly against the muted tones of the river and tall grass, giving the scene a subtle cinematic feel without trying too hard.

They took a short break at a wooden gazebo. The sunlight came through at an angle, creating natural shadows that added depth. Not far from there, they walked hand in hand through a path lined with lush trees. The way they leaned into each other created an easy, unforced sense of closeness.

For the night session, we moved to a more cultural area in Kyoto. The atmosphere shifted, quieter, and a bit more intimate. The narrow alleys, wooden facades, and warm lantern lights created a timeless setting. They paused near a small local shrine. The orange torii gate and soft glow from the lanterns added warmth to the scene. We continued through the alleys, where dim lighting and scattered city lights reflected on the streets and shop signs. It felt both classic and slightly modern at the same time.

In the tighter alleys, the light became softer and more diffused. Their gestures, small touches and standing close naturally created an intimate mood. Every corner felt worth capturing, not because it was perfect, but because it felt like authentic Japan night vibes.

Then, they passed a vending machine glowing in bright colors. Their reflections on the glass, mixed with shadows, created a contrasting visual, adding a modern touch within the traditional surroundings. Nearby, there was a small park. They spent a few moments on the swings, just being playful. It was simple, but it added another layer to the story, not just romantic, but also comfortable.

For the final part, they walked through the alleys again, stopping briefly under lanterns and illuminated shop signs. The mix of soft light and quiet streets wrapped the session in a calm, steady ending. It was a lovely day, from a quiet morning proposal to a slower, more intimate night. I’m glad I could document it in a way that felt close to how it actually happened. Hopefully, when they look back at these photos, it brings them back to that beautiful day in Kyoto.
