A Romantic Morning Framed in Nature and Tradition
This is the story of Callum and Janelle, who booked a couple photoshoot during their holiday in Japan. When Callum contacted me, he mentioned that they loved nature and Japanese traditions, eventually deciding to book two sessions in two different locations. He also shared his plan to propose during the photoshoot. I was more than happy to help him plan the flow and recommend a location that felt right for such a special moment. For the first session, they arrived at a serene park while I was already in position, hidden with my candid lens ready. They walked across a wooden bridge over a tranquil pond, completely unaware of what was about to happen. In the middle of the bridge, Callum suddenly went down on one knee and opened the ring box. Janelle covered her mouth in shock before quickly saying yes. I used a wide-angle lens to capture both the surrounding nature and this heartfelt proposal moment.
The gentle autumn breeze made the morning feel calm as they continued wandering through the park. Walking down a staircase lined with trees, I photographed their natural connection, at one point they danced softly among the autumn colors. A few steps away, they crossed a quiet stream. Callum held Janelle’s hand as they walked over the stepping stones, sharing a gentle kiss in the middle of the path. It was a simple romantic moment framed by nature. I also took few close up shots with warm-toned leaves creating a soft natural frame around them.
Every corner of this location offered a charming photo spot. I captured different angles of them on another bridge, with a rocky river below and layers of lush trees surrounding them, beautiful blend of love and nature. They walked over grass covered in fallen leaves and shared another small dance, just enjoying the moment. I photographed their reflection on the water as they kissed, creating a quiet, almost cinematic scene.
A short walk away, we entered a denser forest area where the atmosphere felt peaceful and almost zen-like. They crossed another small river on stepping stones, and behind them a small waterfall added a gentle sense of harmony to the frame. Nearby stood a willow tree, its long branches hanging down and naturally framing their connection. Before the first session ended, I captured a few shots of them by a vending machine and a quiet street lined with Japanese signs, adding a subtle Kyoto street vibe to their gallery.
For the second session, they changed into kimono outfits to highlight the traditional side of Kyoto. We began with portraits in front of a vibrant torii gate, adding cultural depth to the series. Hand in hand, they walked through streets lined with wooden buildings, simple but visually charming in their traditional attire. I took several photos in front of quaint storefronts with wooden facades and hanging lanterns.
They paused for a moment at a small local shrine. As the sunlight began to rise, I used that single beam of light to capture them in a dramatic yet gentle contrast, with the surrounding shadows framing the moment. We moved through a narrow alleyway between wooden houses, the quiet setting creating an intimate atmosphere. They shared a small dance again, with red lanterns above them and soft morning light reflecting on the wood, giving the moment a subtle cinematic feel.
The session ended as we walked past roadside trees with colorful foliage. The tone shifted into something more playful, they peeked cheekily from behind a tree and later posed with red maple leaves covering their eyes. For a modern twist, I photographed them standing cheerfully in front of a Family Mart sign, mixing contemporary daily life with the charm of Japanese tradition. I’m grateful to have documented their journey, from the surprise proposal to a calm morning walk through Kyoto’s traditional district. I hope these photos bring them joy, and that whenever they look back at them, they can relive the warmth of this day.
