A Heartfelt Surprise Proposal and Intimate Moment

As a photographer, I often guide my clients through their sessions, from setting the scene to giving gentle direction and capturing their moments as naturally as possible. This story with Darren and Ng Hwee Veng began when Darren contacted Ng’s sister to help him plan a surprise proposal during their trip to Japan. She then contacted me to book the session and asked if I could help create a natural flow for the surprise proposal. I was certainly more than happy to help them plan this once in a lifetime moment.

On the day of the shoot, Darren and Ng Hwee Veng traveled from Osaka to Kyoto to meet Ng’s sister and her partner. They arrived early in the morning at a quiet park surrounded by soft autumn colors and began exploring the beautiful location. Suddenly, light rain started to fall. They quickly grabbed a transparent umbrella, which unexpectedly added a delicate aesthetic that made the scene even more meaningful. As they crossed an enchanting bridge overlooking the park’s lake, Darren suddenly knelt down in the middle of the bridge and opened the ring box. Ng Hwee Veng was shocked for a moment before she immediately said yes. The quiet morning instantly turned into a moment filled with emotion. From the side of the bridge, her family watched with teary eyes. Moments later, they walked toward the bridge, giving Ng Hwee Veng an another surprise, she hadn’t expected her parents to be there as well. After the proposal, we took some family photos that captured their pure happiness.

I documented their moments using a wide-angle lens to embrace the surrounding autumn nature, mixed with candid shots highlighting their gestures of connection. I also added a few close up frames to capture the delicate details of the engagement ring, along with some casual photos in front of a vending machine. The morning session and surprise proposal unfolded smoothly, and we continued to a second location that offered a more traditional atmosphere.

And then we continue to the next location around 04.00 pm. The session began on a narrow street lined with wooden buildings, shops and small restaurants. We passed by a local shrine and took a few photos there to add cultural depth to their gallery. As the lanterns started to light up, the scene became slightly cinematic.

They shared small dance between the traditional buildings, looking at each other with quiet affection. We continued the stroll, stopping in front of a store with luminous signage. It's lights cast a gentle glow around them, enhancing the Kyoto night street ambience. The city lights began to glow, creating a backdrop that felt almost like a movie scene. We passed another vending machine, which carried a different mood at night. Their reflections on the glass added a soft visual interest.

Not far from there, we reached a riverside surrounded by trees. I captured a few moments of them on the bridge as night settled in. The gentle city lights reflected on the water, creating warm gold tones across the river. I’m grateful I had the chance to document their story, from the calm morning proposal to the intimate evening session. I hope they find lasting happiness, and that these photos serve as a cherished memory.
