From Wooden Alleys to Twinkling Skylines


This is the story of Erick and Barbara, a lovely couple visiting Japan to spend meaningful, quality time together. On this trip, they wanted to capture a different side of Japan: the charm of the city after dark. When they came across my portfolio, they immediately felt connected to the mood and style of my night photography, and without hesitation, they booked an evening session. After discussing their vision, I recommended a location that truly reflects the iconic Kyoto night vibes, and they were excited to explore it with me.

We arrived just after the sun had slipped below the horizon. The streets were calm, and the warm lantern lights began illuminating the wooden buildings around us. As Erick and Barbara strolled hand in hand through the narrow paths, I captured their moments in front of a small shop adorned with traditional Japanese lanterns. The soft, warm glow against the wooden façade created a cinematic atmosphere, perfect for the intimate feeling they wanted.

A short walk away, we wandered into a quiet alleyway, one of my favorite spots for capturing closeness and emotion. They shared a small dance, completely immersed in the moment. I photographed them candidly, focusing on their gentle gestures and the natural connection that flowed effortlessly between them. Nearby, we found a local shrine. I switched to a wide-angle lens to include the lanterns and the vibrant torii gate behind them, adding cultural depth to their story. With the shrine’s soft lighting framing them, Erick gazed at Barbara with such tenderness before lifting her hand for a gentle kiss. It was a simple gesture, yet it filled the atmosphere with warmth and romance.

To add a modern touch to the session, we also took portraits near a vending machine. The neon glow reflecting on their faces, creating a playful contrast to the traditional scenes we had just captured. We continued the stroll, stopping in front of another shop with luminous signage. Its lights cast a beautiful glow around them, enhancing the Kyoto night street ambience. The autumn breeze gave the evening a relaxing feel, and their silhouettes blended harmoniously with the softly lit surroundings.

The session concluded with a leisurely walk towards city lights. I took a few final shots with the distant urban glow behind them, capturing the silhouette of a majestic pagoda rising against the night sky. It added a timeless touch, one that beautifully wrapped their Japan experience into a lasting memory.
