A Timeless Journey from Golden Hour to City Lights


This is the story of Khalil and Sumaiya, a lovely recently engaged couple from Canada who took a break from their busy lives to celebrate this milestone with a trip to Japan. When they found my work, they shared their wish to experience two distinct sides of Kyoto: its peaceful natural landscapes and the charm of traditional Japanese streets. During our conversation, I learned that these photos would later be displayed at their wedding, an honor that made this session even more meaningful.

We began in the late afternoon at Maruyama Park, just as the golden light filtered through the trees. Khalil and Sumaiya walked hand in hand along the stone bridge, surrounded by the calm and intimate atmosphere of early autumn. The soft light illuminated the trees, creating a warm and magical backdrop. They laughed, whispered, and simply enjoyed the peaceful rhythm of the park. We found a unique spot beneath a graceful willow tree, its branches gently framing them. I captured moments that felt natural and tender, quiet yet deeply connected.

As the day turned into night, we made our way toward the Gion District to capture the beauty of Kyoto’s traditional side. The traditional wooden buildings glowed softly under the city lights, radiating warmth against the evening breeze. We stopped at a local shrine just as the lanterns began to glow, casting a cinematic light across the orange torii gates. The gentle contrast of warm tones and shadows added emotion and depth to each frame.

Later, we wandered through a hidden alleyway illuminated by amber lights. Moving through the narrow street alongside the traditional buildings created an intimate, almost secret scene. They embraced these evening vibes and began to dance quietly, a spontaneous moment that spoke more than words ever could. We continued exploring the neighborhood and found a charming wooden house lit by lanterns that created a beautifully cinematic setting.

We also stopped for a few casual shots near vending machines, a must-have photo spot in Japan. The soft neon glow added a playful modern contrast to their warm, romantic story. The evening ended with a slow walk past cozy restaurants, where the aroma of Japanese food filled the crisp autumn air. They decided to try their first Japanese snack, Takoyaki, a simple, joyful moment that perfectly captured the heart of travel memories.

This session reminded me why I love photography: the opportunity to capture honest, fleeting emotions in a way that feels both beautiful and real. I wish Khalil and Sumaiya a lifetime of love and adventures as warm and genuine as this special day in Kyoto.
