Beautiful Surprise Proposal Witnessed by Majestic Pagoda
This is the story of Thomas and Valerie, a couple who chose to spend their winter holiday in Japan. When they were looking for a photographer to document their trip, they felt connected to my photography style. Thomas reach out to me to booking session and shared that he was planning to propose during the photoshoot. I felt honored that he trusted me to capture this special moment. That morning, they arrived at a heritage location surrounded by stillness and nature. The session began in front of a tree with small cherry blossoms starting to appear among mostly bare branches, a subtle sign of the seasonal transition. As they walked hand in hand, a tiered pagoda stood in the background, adding a strong presence to the scene. Suddenly, Thomas went down on one knee. He took out a ring box, Valerie was clearly surprised and with smile she said yes.
After that heartfelt moment, they continued exploring the area. The session moved naturally through the surroundings, with wooden structures and bare trees giving a classic tone to the images. As the sunlight slowly came through, it added a soft warmth to the scene.
They walked through the temple grounds, enjoying the quiet view and serene atmosphere. Gradually their interactions became more relaxed and playful. They moved between the trees, lightly playing around, and those small gestures reflected their connection in a natural way.
For the next part of the session, they moved into iconic Kyoto’s alleys. Surrounded by rows of wooden buildings, the setting shifted into something more intimate. They walked slowly, occasionally pausing, even sharing a small dance along the path. When passing a local shrine, they stopped in front of an orange torii gate. It added a cultural layer to their photos. Thomas surprised Valerie with a bouquet of flower, which she received with a bright and genuine smile.
They continued into a narrower alley, where the space naturally brought them closer together. The textures of wooden facades and small storefronts with lanterns gave a strong sense of Kyoto’s authentic street ambience. For contrast, they also stopped briefly by a vending machine, adding a touch of everyday life in Japan to their gallery.
Their walk eventually led them to the river. They paused there, looking over the clear water and taking in the quiet morning. Sitting together by the riverbank, looking out at the water lined with trees, the setting felt still and completely uninterrupted. Later, they moved to a nearby garden. Winter gave the landscape a unique kind of romance, allowing the focus to shift entirely toward their interactions: the way they stood close, how they looked at each other, and the quiet gestures that showed their bond.
Crossing a stone bridge, they met in the middle, framed naturally by the surroundings. As they continued explore toward lush area, the space became more enclosed with greenery. They stepped across a shallow rocky stream, with a small waterfall in the background, adding a calm, harmonious balanced tone to their images.
In the crisp winter breeze, they held each other for a moment. The setting felt deeply intimate without needing much direction. Toward the end of the session, I take few close-up shots of the engagement ring, marking the beautiful beginning of their next chapter. I am grateful they trusted me to turn their short getaway into timeless memories. Wishing them a lifetime of happiness, and I hope that whenever they look back at these photos, they are instantly warmed by the memory of that beautiful winter morning in Kyoto.
